The Mark I Mini<\/strong><\/em><\/span> (1959\u20131967) was the first version of British Motor Corporation<\/strong><\/em><\/span>‘s Mini Cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span>. It is characterised by its sliding windows, external door hinges and “moustache” grill. In the United Kingdom the Mark I Mini<\/strong><\/em><\/span> was produced between 1959 and 1967, with production in Australia continuing until 1970.<\/p>\n

The production version of the MINI Cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span> was demonstrated to the press in April 1959, and by August several thousand cars had been produced ready for the first sales.<\/p>\n

The name MINI Cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span> did not appear by itself immediately\u2014the first models being marketed under two of BMC<\/strong><\/em><\/span>‘s brand names, Austin Cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span> and Morris Cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span>. The name Austin Seven Cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span> (sometimes written as SE7EN<\/strong><\/em><\/span> in early publicity material) recalled the popular small Austin 7 Cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span> of the 1920s and 1930s. The other name used until 1967 in the United Kingdom (and in Commonwealth countries such as Australia), Morris Mini-Minor Cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, seems to have been a play on words. The Morris Minor Cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span> was a well known and successful Cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, with the word minor<\/strong><\/em><\/span>being Latin for “smaller” so an abbreviation of the Latin word for “smallest”\u2014minimus\u2014was used for the new even smaller car.
