The name of the car&#8217;s brand,&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">MINI<\/span>, is all-capitalized to distinguish it from its predecessor. Development of the first generation had been done between 1995 and 2001 by&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rover Group<\/span>&nbsp;in Gaydon, United Kingdom and&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">BMW AG<\/span>&nbsp;in Munich, Germany. During this development phase, there was continual contention between the two design groups, especially concerning the positioning of the car,&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rover<\/span>&nbsp;wanted a straight economy car, whilst&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">BMW<\/span>&nbsp;supported a small, sporting car. Ultimately,&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">BMW<\/span>prevailed, and in 1999, they assumed control over the entire project following the departure of&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">BMW<\/span>&#8216;s CEO, Bernd Pischetsrieder. In November 2006,&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">BMW<\/span>&nbsp;released a re-engineered version of the&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Mini Hardtop<\/span>&nbsp;(unofficially the &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Mk II Mini<\/span>&#8220;) as a 2007 model-year vehicle.
