Lotus Cars Mark IV Parts 1<\/span><\/h3>\n
Lotus Mark IV<\/strong><\/em><\/span> was a trials car by Colin Chapman<\/strong><\/em><\/span> built on a Austin 7<\/strong><\/em><\/span> chassis. Colin Chapman<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u2019s success at building trials Lotus cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span> brought another previous customer, Mike Lawson<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, to order a second trials car in 1952 to replace his Lotus Mark II<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, in which he won the Wrotham Cup<\/strong><\/span>. Once again Colin Chapman<\/strong><\/em><\/span> chose an Austin Seven<\/strong><\/em><\/span> as the starting point, reinforcing the frame and installing a four-cylinder 1172cc (71.5ci) Ford sidevalve engine<\/strong><\/em><\/span>. Colin Chapman<\/strong><\/em><\/span> used all the tricks he had learned in his previous cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, constructing a lightweight aluminum body with a rounded nosecone. He fitted a 3-speed transmission taken from a Ford 8<\/strong><\/em><\/span>and the divided front axle as on his previous cars<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Mike Lawson<\/strong><\/em><\/span> won his class in the very first attempt in this car, following up with others, solidifying Colin Chapman<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u2019s reputation as a designer and engineer. The success of this car<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, and other requests for more cars, led Chapman<\/strong><\/em><\/span> and Michael Allen<\/strong><\/em><\/span> to establish Lotus Engineering<\/strong><\/em><\/span> in a disused stable in Hornsey.<\/p>\n
