At the turn of the century many of the <\/span>London<\/span> cab-drivers were not convinced by the new motorised \u2018horse-less\u2019 new-fangled contraptions:<\/span><\/div>\n

 In his diary on <\/span>15th<\/sup> October 1901<\/span>, journalist R.D. Blumenfeld recalls a conversation with a cab-driver.<\/span><\/div>\n

My hansom cab-driver who calls for me every morning at <\/span>two o\u2019clock<\/span> after we have sent the paper to press informed me that his brother, who is also a cabman is taking lessons in automobile driving in the hope that some day he will be able to drive a horseless cab. I told him it would be a good idea if he, too, took lessons, but he shouted through the opening at the top that he wasn\u2019t going to waste his money on such foolishness,<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThem automobiles,\u201d he said, \u201care all right as playthings, but you can\u2019t depend on \u2018em. Besides, they are dangerous, and you can\u2019t guarantee getting you\u2019re fare to the place  he wants to reach. You\u2019ll never beat my old \u2018orse.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
