The wireless was here to stay and on the 30th December 1922 at 9 o’clock John Reith the newly appointed Managing Director of the B.B.C arrived. John Montgomery in his book “The Twenties” paints this portrait. <\/span><\/div>\n

“From the earliest days Mr. Reith insisted on the announcers wearing evening dress. A man of strong religious convictions, he was determined that broadcasting should be conducted as a national service, with definite standards, and not used for entertainment alone.
