This paper aims to find who the pilots<br \/>really were and how<br \/>     they felt about their suicide mission. The hypothesis for the research<br \/>was that any pilot<br \/>     could become a Kamikaze pilot, and that the pilots probably felt<br \/>scared, yet took the<br \/>     responsibility to carry out their mission.<br \/>     Most of the investigations were made through primary sources. Since<br \/>the Kamikaze<br \/>     attacks were made from bases in Kyushu, there are several museums<br \/>there where<br \/>     information may be found. There, the actual letters and diaries that<br \/>the pilots had left<br \/>     behind are displayed. Also, fifteen interviews with survivors of the<br \/>attacks, relatives and<br \/>     other people related to the attacks were made. Since the Kamikaze<br \/>attacks were made<br \/>     only fifty years ago, a great quantity of documents was available.<br \/>     The time period in concern is from early 1944 to 1945, and the topic<br \/>being the<br \/>     Kamikaze pilots, and the region of research was within Japan, mainly<br \/>Kyushu.<br \/>     The conclusion of this extended essay was that the pilots were<br \/>ordinary, average young<br \/>     men of the time who volunteered, and that most felt that their dying<br \/>in such a mission<br \/>     would improve the war situation for the Japanese. However, exactly how<br \/>the pilots felt<br \/>     could not be fully understood by a student researching the topic fifty<br \/>years after the<br \/>     actual attack.<br \/><br \/>          In blossom today, then scattered:<br \/>          Life is so like a delicate flower.<br \/>          How can one expect the fragrance<br \/>          To last for ever?<br \/><br \/>          --Admiral Onishi Takijiro<br \/><br \/>     Introduction<br \/><br \/>     During World War II in the Pacific, there were pilots of the Japanese<br \/>Imperial Army<br \/>     and Navy who made suicide attacks, driving their planes to<br \/>deliberately crash into<br \/>     carriers and battle- ships of the Allied forces. These were the pilots<br \/>known as the<br \/>     Kamikaze pilots. This essay focuses on how they felt about their<br \/>suicide mission.<br \/>     Because right-wing organizations have used the Kamikaze pilots as a<br \/>symbol of a<br \/>     militaristic and extremely nationalistic Japan, the current Japanese<br \/>respond to the issue<br \/>     with ignorance and false stereotypes and with generally negative and<br \/>unsympathetic<br \/>     remarks. The aim of this essay is to reveal the often unknown truth<br \/>concerning the<br \/>     pilots, and above all to give a clearer image as to who the pilots<br \/>really were.<br \/>     The hypothesis behind the question, \"Who were the Kamikaze pilots and<br \/>how did they<br \/>     feel towards their suicide mission?\" is that any pilot devoted to the<br \/>country, who<br \/>     volunteered and was chosen felt scared, yet took the responsibility to<br \/>carry out his<br \/>     mission.<br \/><br \/>     Part One<br \/><br \/>     The death of Emperor Taisho may be the point when Japan had started to<br \/>become the<br \/>     fascist state that it was during the Pacific War. Although the<br \/>military had been active<br \/>     ever since the Jiji period (1867-1912) in wars such as the Sino-<br \/>Japanese War<br \/>     (1894-1895), and the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), it became<br \/>extremely active<br \/>     when Crown Prince Hirohito became Emperor Showa. Coup d'etats became<br \/>frequent,<br \/>     and several political figures were assassinated. By Emperor Showa's<br \/>reign, the military<br \/>     had the real authority.[1]<br \/>     According to those who have lived through the early Showa period (1926-<br \/>1945), the<br \/>     presence of Emperor Showa was like that of a god and he was more of a<br \/>religious<br \/>     figure than a political one.[2] In many of the haiku that the Kamikaze<br \/>pilots wrote, the<br \/>     Emperor is mentioned in the first line.<br \/>     Systematic and organized education made such efficient \"brainwashing\"<br \/>possible. In<br \/>     public schools, students were taught to die for the emperor. By late<br \/>1944, a slogan of<br \/>     Jusshi Reisho meaning \"Sacrifice life,\" was taught.[3]<br \/>     Most of the pilots who volunteered for the suicide attacks were those<br \/>who were born<br \/>     late in the Taisho period (1912-1926) or in the first two or three<br \/>years of Showa.<br \/>     Therefore, they had gone through the brainwashing education, and were<br \/>products of<br \/>     the militaristic Japan.<br \/>     Censorship brought restrictions on the Japanese people. The letters,<br \/>diaries, and<br \/>     photographs of individual soldiers were all censored. Nothing<br \/>revealing where they<br \/>     were, or what they were doing concerning the military, could be<br \/>communicated.[4]<br \/>     Major restrictions were placed on the press, radio and other media.<br \/>The public was not<br \/>     to be informed of defeats or damage on the Japanese side. Only<br \/>victories and damage<br \/>     imposed on the Allies were to be announced.[5]<br \/>     Another factor that created the extreme atmosphere in Japan were the<br \/>\"Kenpeitai,\" a<br \/>     part of the Imperial Army which checked on the civilians to see if<br \/>they were saying or<br \/>     doing anything against the Emperor or the military.[6]<br \/>     Since the time of feudalism, especially during the Tokugawa period, a<br \/>warrior must<br \/>     follow the Bushido. This Code, and a culture which viewed suicide and<br \/>the death of<br \/>     young people as beautiful were factors contributing to the mass<br \/>suicides.[7]<br \/><br \/>     Part Two<br \/><br \/>     Although it was only from 1944 that the General Staff had considered<br \/>mounting<br \/>     organized suicide attacks,[8] \"suicide attacks\" had been made since<br \/>the Japanese<br \/>     attack on Pearl Harbor.[9] Two types of suicide attacks had been made.<br \/>The first was<br \/>     an organized attack which would, in 90% of the cases, result in the<br \/>death of the<br \/>     soldiers. However, if the plan had worked on the battlefield as it did<br \/>in theory, there<br \/>     was some possibility that the soldiers would survive.[10] The other<br \/>type of suicide<br \/>     attack that had been made was completely voluntary, and the result of<br \/>a sudden<br \/>     decision. This was usually done by aircraft. The pilots, finding no<br \/>efficient way to fight<br \/>     the American aircraft, deliberately crashed into them, and caused an<br \/>explosion,<br \/>     destroying the American aircraft as well as killing themselves.[11]<br \/>     Because these voluntary suicide attacks had shown that the young<br \/>pilots had the spirit<br \/>     of dying rather than being defeated, by February, 1944, the staff<br \/>officers had started to<br \/>     believe that although they were way below the Americans in the number<br \/>of aircraft,<br \/>     battleships, skillful pilots and soldiers, and in the amount of<br \/>natural resources (oil, for<br \/>     example), they were above the Americans in the number of young men who<br \/>would fight<br \/>     to the death rather than be defeated. By organizing the \"Tokkotai,\"<br \/>they thought it<br \/>     would also attack the Americans psychologically, and make them lose<br \/>their will to<br \/>     continue the war.[12] The person who suggested the Kamikaze attack at<br \/>first is<br \/>     unknown, but it is often thought to be Admiral Takijiro Onishi.<br \/>However, Onishi was in<br \/>     the position to command the first Shinpu Tokubetsu Kogekitai rather<br \/>than suggest<br \/>     it.[13]<br \/>     In October, 1944, the plans for the organized suicide attacks became<br \/>reality. Having<br \/>     received permission from the Minister of the Navy, Admiral Onishi<br \/>entered Clark Air<br \/>     Base prepared to command the first organized suicide attacks.[14]<br \/>Onishi had not<br \/>     thought the organized suicide attacks to be an efficient tactic, but<br \/>that they would be a<br \/>     powerful battle tactic, and he believed that it would be the best and<br \/>most beautiful<br \/>     place for the pilots to die. Onishi once said, \"if they (the young<br \/>pilots) are on land, they<br \/>     would be bombed down, and if they are in the air, they would be shot<br \/>down. That's<br \/>     sad...Too sad...To let the young men die beautifully, that's what<br \/>Tokko is. To give<br \/>     beautiful death, that's called sympathy.\"[15]<br \/>     This statement makes sense, considering the relative skills of the<br \/>pilots of the time. By<br \/>     1944, air raids were made all over Japan, especially in the cities.<br \/>Most of the best<br \/>     pilots of the Navy and the Army had been lost in previous battles.<br \/>Training time was<br \/>     greatly reduced to the minimum, or even less than was necessary in<br \/>order to train a<br \/>     pilot. By the time the organized suicide attacks had started, the<br \/>pilots only had the<br \/>     ability to fly, not to fight. Although what happens to the pilot<br \/>himself in doing the suicide<br \/>     attack is by no means anywhere near beauty, to die in such a way, for<br \/>the Emperor,<br \/>     and for the country, was (at the time), honorable.<br \/>     One thing that was decided upon by the General Staff was that the<br \/>Kamikaze attacks<br \/>     were to be made only if it was in the will of the pilot himself. It<br \/>was too much of a task<br \/>     to be \"commanded.\"[16]<br \/>     The first organized suicide attack was made on October 21, 1944 by a<br \/>squadron<br \/>     called the Shinpu Tokubetsu Kogekitai.[17] Tokubetsu Kogekitai was the<br \/>name<br \/>     generally used in the Japanese Imperial Navy and Army. The public had<br \/>known them<br \/>     as the Tokkotai, the abbreviated form. Tokkotai referred to all the<br \/>organized suicide<br \/>     attacks. Shinpu is what is better known as Kamikaze.[18] The captain<br \/>of the first<br \/>     attack was to be Captain Yukio Seki.[19]<br \/>     How was Captain Seki talked into such a task? According to the<br \/>subcommander of the<br \/>     First Air Fleet, Tamai, who brought the issue up to Captain Seki, the<br \/>Captain had in a<br \/>     short time replied \"I understand. Please let me do it.\"[20] According<br \/>to another source,<br \/>     the reply that Captain Seki gave was, \"Please let me think about it<br \/>one night. I will<br \/>     accept the offer tomorrow morning.\"[21]<br \/>     The document which seems to have the most credibility is the book, The<br \/>Divine Wind<br \/>     by Captain Rikihei Inoguchi and Commander Tadashi Nakajima. According<br \/>to this<br \/>     account a graduate of the Naval Academy, Naoshi Kanno, was originally<br \/>nominated as<br \/>     the leader of this mission. However, he was away from Mabalacat on a<br \/>mission to<br \/>     mainland Japan. Therefore, to take Kanno's place Captain Seki was<br \/>chosen, and was<br \/>     called to Commander Tamai's room at midnight. After hearing of the<br \/>mission, it<br \/>     appears, Seki remained silent for a while, then replied, \"You must let<br \/>me do it.\"[22]<br \/>     The reason this is the most credible document is because it had been<br \/>written by<br \/>     Captain Rikihei Inoguchi, who was actually there with Tamai and Seki,<br \/>and named the<br \/>     first unit, Shinpu. It is doubtful that there was a flaw in his memory<br \/>since the book was<br \/>     published in 1959, only 14 years after the war.<br \/>     In any case, Captain Seki agreed to lead the first Kamikaze attack,<br \/>and, on October<br \/>     25, 1944 during the battle off Samos, made one of the first attacks,<br \/>on the American<br \/>     aircraft carrier Saint Lo.[23] Twenty-six fighter planes were<br \/>prepared, of which half<br \/>     were to escort and the other half to make the suicide mission. That<br \/>half was divided<br \/>     into the Shikishima, Yamato, Asahi and Yamazakura.[24]<br \/><br \/>     Part Three<br \/><br \/>     The youngest of the Kamikaze pilots of the Imperial Army was 17 years<br \/>old,[25] and<br \/>     the oldest, 35.[26] Most of them were in their late teens, or early<br \/>twenties. As the<br \/>     battle in Okinawa [April to June 1945] worsened, the average age of<br \/>the pilots got<br \/>     younger. Some had only completed the equivalent of an elementary<br \/>school and middle<br \/>     school combined. Some had been to college. There was a tendency for<br \/>them not to be<br \/>     first sons. The eldest sons usually took over the family business.<br \/>Most were therefore<br \/>     the younger sons who did not need to worry about the family business.<br \/>     Most of those who had come from college came in what is called the<br \/>Gakuto<br \/>     Shutsujin. This was when the college students' exemption from being<br \/>drafted into the<br \/>     military was lifted, and the graduation of the seniors was shifted<br \/>from April 1944 to<br \/>     September 1943.[27]<br \/>     Many of these students were from prestigious colleges such as Tokyo,<br \/>Kyoto, Keio,<br \/>     and Waseda Universities. These students from college tended to have<br \/>more liberal<br \/>     ideas, not having been educated in military schools, and also were<br \/>more aware of the<br \/>     world outside of Japan.<br \/>     Where were the pilots trained? All the pilots involved in the \"Okinawa<br \/>Tokko\" had<br \/>     been trained in\/as one of the following: The Youth Pilot Training<br \/>School, Candidates for<br \/>     Second Lieutenant, The Imperial Army Air Corps Academy, Pilot Trainee,<br \/>Flight<br \/>     Officer Candidates, Special Flight Officer Probationary Cadet, Pilot<br \/>Training Schools,<br \/>     or Special Flight Officer Candidate.[28]<br \/><br \/>     Part Four<br \/><br \/>     Since the Kamikaze attacks were to be made only if the pilots had<br \/>volunteered, and<br \/>     could not be \"commanded,\" there were two methods to collect<br \/>volunteers. One was for<br \/>     all pilots in general, and another was for the Special Flight Officer<br \/>Probationary Cadet<br \/>     (College graduates) only. The former was an application form, and the<br \/>latter was a<br \/>     survey. The survey asked: \"Do you desire earnestly\/wish\/do not wish\/to<br \/>be involved in<br \/>     the Kamikaze attacks?\" They had to circle one of the three choices, or<br \/>leave the paper<br \/>     blank. The important fact is that the pilots were required to sign<br \/>their names.[29] When<br \/>     the military had the absolute power, and the whole atmosphere of Japan<br \/>expected men<br \/>     to die for the country, there was great psychological pressure to<br \/>circle \"earnestly<br \/>     desire\" or \"wish.\" The Army selected those who had circled \"earnestly<br \/>desire.\" The<br \/>     reason that the Special Flight Officer Probationary Cadet had to<br \/>answer such a survey<br \/>     rather than send the applications at their own will was probably<br \/>because the military<br \/>     had known that the students who had come from college had a wider<br \/>vision, and would<br \/>     not easily apply for such a mission. For the regular application, the<br \/>Army was confident<br \/>     that there would be many young pilots who would apply. They were<br \/>correct. Every<br \/>     student of the 15th term of the Youth Pilot Training School had<br \/>applied. Because there<br \/>     were so many volunteers, the military had decided to let the ones with<br \/>better grades go<br \/>     first.[30]<br \/>     There are several factors which made so many young pilots volunteer<br \/>for such a<br \/>     mission. Extreme patriotism must have been one factor for sure. Added<br \/>to that, there<br \/>     was the reverence for the Emperor, a god. Some say that it was<br \/>generally believed that<br \/>     if one died for the emperor, and was praised in Yasukuni Shrine, they<br \/>would become<br \/>     happy forever.[31]<br \/>     The effect of the brainwashing that the military had done to the<br \/>students is surprising.<br \/>     The pilots felt it was \"obvious\" that they were to take part in the<br \/>Kamikaze attacks.<br \/>     Most pilots mention in letters that they were happy, and proud of<br \/>being given such an<br \/>     honorable mission. It is true also that they believed that if they<br \/>took part in the mission,<br \/>     it might improve the war situation for Japan.[32]<br \/>     What the military education was like was described in a diary kept by<br \/>Corporal Yukio<br \/>     Araki, from the time he had entered the Youth Pilot Training School,<br \/>until the night<br \/>     before his original date of departure for Okinawa.<br \/>     Since anything written was checked by one of the military staff,<br \/>nothing that would<br \/>     upset the military or contradict the ideas of the Japanese government<br \/>could be written.<br \/>     However, more importantly, because of the lack of privacy, personal<br \/>emotions could<br \/>     not be written. Therefore, in Corporal Araki's diary, very rarely can<br \/>anything \"personal\"<br \/>     be found. The first several days in the Training school, he simply<br \/>lists the subjects that<br \/>     were studied that day, and what was done for physical training. Later<br \/>on he mentions<br \/>     what was done for training, the events that took place, and other<br \/>things he had done.<br \/>     However, most of what he wrote was about the \"warning\" he<br \/>received.[33] The<br \/>     following are some of the \"warnings\" he had received:<br \/>          There is an attitude problem when listening to the officers.[34]<br \/>          Some students seem to smile or laugh during training, and others<br \/>are being<br \/>          lazy...In general there seems to be a lack of spirit.[35]<br \/>          Straighten yourself. It reveals your spirit.[36]<br \/>     The education emphasized the mind, spirit and attitude. Neatness and<br \/>cleanliness were<br \/>     also frequently mentioned. Usually, a hard slap in the face<br \/>accompanied these warnings.<br \/>     The way the 15-year- old boy responded to the warning was: \"I must try<br \/>harder.\"[37]<br \/>     One of the listed subjects in the diary was a course called \"Spiritual<br \/>Moral Lecture,\"<br \/>     nearly every other day. What exactly was taught in the course is not<br \/>mentioned.<br \/>     However it seemed that in some of these courses, great military<br \/>figures who died for<br \/>     Japan were mentioned.[38] It is a certainty that this course was one<br \/>factor in making<br \/>     the pilots feel \"happy and proud\" to be involved in the Kamikaze<br \/>attacks.<br \/>     The military education was quickly absorbed by these young pilots-to-<br \/>be. It was in<br \/>     October 1943 that the young boy had entered the Training School. By<br \/>the next<br \/>     February, he had written a short poem saying that a Japanese man<br \/>should be praised<br \/>     when he dies as he should for the Emperor.[39]<br \/>     The amount of time students spent in the Youth Pilot Training School<br \/>was reduced from<br \/>     three years to less than two years for the 15th term students.<br \/>Therefore, the schedule<br \/>     was tight and tough.[40] There was almost no holiday at all, and many<br \/>of the planned<br \/>     holidays were canceled.[41] What Corporal Araki called a \"holiday\" was<br \/>very much<br \/>     different from what is normally considered a holiday. An example of<br \/>his holiday started<br \/>     with some sort of ceremony, followed by listening and learning new<br \/>songs (probably of<br \/>     war), and watching a movie. Something related to the military was<br \/>taught even on days<br \/>     called \"holidays.\"[42] Therefore, they were given no time to \"think.\"<br \/>There was<br \/>     something to do almost every minute that they were awake, and they<br \/>were taught what<br \/>     the right spirit was. By not giving them time to think, they had no<br \/>time to evaluate what<br \/>     they were being taught. They just absorbed it, and as a result, by the<br \/>time they<br \/>     graduated, they were brainwashed.<br \/>     Corporal Araki had an older brother and three younger brothers. In his<br \/>will to his<br \/>     parents, he mentioned that he wished two of his younger brothers to<br \/>also enter the<br \/>     military; one should enter the Navy and become an officer, the other<br \/>to enter the Army<br \/>     and also become an officer. He also mentions that he wishes that his<br \/>brothers follow his<br \/>     path (and be involved in the Kamikaze attacks).[43]<br \/>     Mr. S. Araki, Corporal Araki's older brother, mentioned that his<br \/>brother had greatly<br \/>     changed after entering the military school. He remembers that his<br \/>brother's attitude<br \/>     towards him was not casual, and it was not like he was talking to a<br \/>brother. He felt that<br \/>     he had really grown up since he had seen him last, both physically and<br \/>     psychologically.[44]<br \/>     There are three references in which Corporal Araki's thoughts towards<br \/>the mission may<br \/>     be found: his will, last letters, and his diary. In his will to his<br \/>parents, and to his brother,<br \/>     he mentions that he has no nostalgic sentiments. In his will addressed<br \/>to his brother, he<br \/>     mentions that he would like him to consider the mission as piety. In a<br \/>postcard sent on<br \/>     the day of his mission, he calls the mission, \"an honorable mission,\"<br \/>and that he is<br \/>     looking forward to see them again at Yasukuni Shrine.[45] It was in<br \/>the end of March<br \/>     1945, that Corporal Araki's unit's mission was ordered to take<br \/>place.[46] From just<br \/>     before then, Corporal Araki had not written in his diary. After an<br \/>entry on March 16,<br \/>     there were no entries for two months. He wrote, because he was busy,<br \/>there was no<br \/>     time to write.[47] Could that be true? Indeed, his squadron was on a<br \/>tight schedule for<br \/>     March. From the 25th, they returned from P'yongyang to Gifu<br \/>prefecture.[48]<br \/>     However, Sergeant Kazuo Arai had been able to keep a diary at the<br \/>time.[49] It may<br \/>     be because of strong personal emotions he just could not keep the<br \/>diary. Or, it may be<br \/>     that he could care no longer about keeping a diary. In either case the<br \/>fact that he had<br \/>     not written an entry on the day that the mission was officially<br \/>ordered, when he had<br \/>     written every other special event down, reveals that he was no longer<br \/>in the state of<br \/>     mind that he had been.<br \/>     The planned date of the mission of the 72nd Shinbu squadron (which was<br \/>the squadron<br \/>     to which Corporal Araki belonged) was initially, May 21, 1945.<br \/>However, because of<br \/>     rainy weather, it was postponed to May 27, 1945. In his last diary<br \/>entry on May 20,<br \/>     1945, he wrote:[50]<br \/><br \/>          ...at ** o'clock I received the thankful command to depart<br \/>tomorrow. I<br \/>          am deeply emotional, and just hope to sink one (American<br \/>battleship).<br \/>          Already, hundreds of visitors had visited us. Cheerfully singing<br \/>the last<br \/>          season of farewell.[51]<br \/><br \/>     and is cut off there. His handwriting however was very stable, and was<br \/>not as if he was<br \/>     losing control. If for some reason he had to leave the diary for a<br \/>while, why did he not<br \/>     go back to it? Was it that he had become extremely emotional that he<br \/>could no longer<br \/>     write? In any case, he never returned to his diary.<br \/><br \/>     Part Five<br \/><br \/>     In reading the last letters of the Kamikaze pilots, there are<br \/>generally two types. One,<br \/>     the \"Typical\" letters and the other, the \"Unique\" letters. Most of the<br \/>typical letters were<br \/>     written by graduates of military schools such as the Youth Pilot<br \/>Training School. The<br \/>     \"Unique\" ones were written by the Special Flight Officer Probationary<br \/>Cadets--the<br \/>     graduates from college. The first two of the following five pilots<br \/>have written a typical<br \/>     letter, and the other three have written unique letters.<br \/>     Corporal Masato Hisanaga of the 72nd Shinbu Squadron was twenty years<br \/>old. In his<br \/>     letter, he thanked his parents for the years that he was alive, and<br \/>reported to them how<br \/>     he had been doing, and informed them of the kindness of the people<br \/>where he had<br \/>     been. After asking his parents to say \"Hi\" to various people, he says<br \/>that he will take<br \/>     revenge for his older brother (who, as it appears, must have been<br \/>killed in the war) by<br \/>     sinking the enemy's battleship and killing its soldiers. He too asks<br \/>that his younger<br \/>     brothers follow their brother (himself). \"All of the (Japanese)<br \/>population is the<br \/>     tokkotai.\" He too mentioned, \"I have no nostalgic sentiments.\"[52]<br \/>     Corporal Shinji Ozeki, 19 years old wrote a will to his mother<br \/>saying:[53]<br \/><br \/>          As a man I will courageously go. Now, I have no special nostalgic<br \/>          sentiments. However, I will go regretting that although being<br \/>born a man, I<br \/>          have not had filial piety.<br \/>          To give this young self for the protection of the imperial<br \/>nation, I believe is<br \/>          piety.<br \/>          I hope that you will forgive my sin of being undutiful and that<br \/>you will live<br \/>          in happiness.[54]<br \/><br \/>     This is similar to what Corporal Araki and Hisanaga had mentioned. All<br \/>reveal their<br \/>     thoughts towards their parents. They believed their dying was piety,<br \/>which shows that<br \/>     they were doing it for their family. All had mentioned having no<br \/>nostalgic sentiments<br \/>     possibly to make their parents feel easier. Because these are<br \/>\"Typical\" letters, many<br \/>     others had written just as they had.<br \/>     The unique ones written by the college graduates included more<br \/>personal feelings. For<br \/>     example, Second Lieutenant Shigeyuki Suzuki wrote:[55]<br \/><br \/>          People say that our feeling is of resignation, but that does not<br \/>know at all<br \/>          how we feel, and think of us as a fish about to be cooked.<br \/>          Young blood does flow in us.<br \/>          There are persons we love, we think of, and many unforgettable<br \/>          memories. However, with those, we cannot win the war.<br \/>          To let this beautiful Japan keep growing, to be released from the<br \/>wicked<br \/>          hands of the Americans and British, and to build a 'freed Asia'<br \/>was our<br \/>          goal from the Gakuto Shutsujin year before last; yet nothing has<br \/>changed.<br \/>          The great day that we can directly be in contact with the battle<br \/>is our day<br \/>          of happiness and at the same time, the memorial of our<br \/>death...[56]<br \/><br \/>     Second Lieutenant Ryoji Uehara, a graduate of Keio University was 22<br \/>years old. His<br \/>     ideas were \"radical\" for the time, and if known by the Kenpeitai, he<br \/>would not have<br \/>     been left alone.[57] In a note, he wrote to a journalist just before<br \/>his mission that he<br \/>     was greatly honored to be chosen as a Kamikaze pilot.[58 ]Yet he also<br \/>wrote, thinking<br \/>     logically with the skills he had gained in college. He believed in<br \/>democracy. He believed<br \/>     that the victory of democracy was obvious, and although fascism would<br \/>make the<br \/>     country appear to be prosperous temporarily, only decline would wait<br \/>for it. He<br \/>     mentioned the fact that Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany had been<br \/>defeated, and that the<br \/>     power of \"Freedom\" will appear in history. He says that if his ideas<br \/>were correct, it<br \/>     would be a tragedy for the nation but that he would be happy. In the<br \/>end of the note he<br \/>     wrote:<br \/>          Tomorrow, one believer in democracy will leave this world. He may<br \/>look<br \/>          lonely, but his heart is filled with satisfaction.<br \/>     Second Lieutenant Uehara believed that he would not go to Yasukuni<br \/>Shrine, but go to<br \/>     heaven where he would be able to meet his brother and the girl he<br \/>loved, who died<br \/>     earlier.[59]<br \/>     Second Lieutenant Toshio Anazawa was engaged. Yet being chosen for<br \/>such a mission<br \/>     that [engagement] was to be canceled. He wrote in his last letter to<br \/>her all the<br \/>     thankfulness he felt for her and her family. He tells her that he does<br \/>not want her to<br \/>     reflect on the time they had spent together.[60] He wrote:<br \/>          As an engaged man, as a man to go, I would like to say a little<br \/>to you, a<br \/>          lady before I go.<br \/>          I only wish your happiness.<br \/>          Do not mind the past. You are not to live in the past.<br \/>          Have the courage and forget the past. You are to create a new<br \/>future.<br \/>          You are to live from moment to moment in the reality. Anazawa no<br \/>longer<br \/>          exists in the reality.[61]<br \/>     Unlike the first two letters, which contained the words, \"I have no<br \/>nostalgic emotions,\"<br \/>     he wrote: \"It's too late now, but I would like to say some of my<br \/>wishes.\"<br \/>     He then listed the books he wanted to read, what he wanted to see,<br \/>what he wanted to<br \/>     listen to, and that he was eager to see her, and to talk to her.[62]<br \/>     The last three writings probably spoke for themselves and require no<br \/>further<br \/>     explanation. They just made clearer the different ways of thought the<br \/>college students<br \/>     had from the others who attended military school.<br \/>     Not only in writing had the thoughts of the pilots appeared. In<br \/>actions, and in speeches<br \/>     too were the emotions visible. Corporal Mineyoshi Takahashi, according<br \/>to Mr. Yasuo<br \/>     Takahashi, his older brother, had changed since entering military<br \/>school, and his<br \/>     attitude in talking with Mr. Takahashi was not as it used to be.[63]<br \/>(The way Mr. Y.<br \/>     Takahashi explained the differences before and after Mineyoshi joined<br \/>the military was<br \/>     similar to the way Mr. S. Araki had explained Yukio's changes.) He<br \/>remembers that<br \/>     the last time they met, he took Corporal Takahashi into the ship he<br \/>was working in.<br \/>     Suddenly, Corporal Takahashi had asked his brother: \"Which part of the<br \/>ship is the<br \/>     weakest?\" Mr. Takahashi remembers that he was extremely surprised, but<br \/>pointed to<br \/>     the place which he knew was the weakest.[64]<br \/>     This reveals that Corporal Takahashi was thinking of his mission<br \/>rather calmly. He had<br \/>     asked the question, probably thinking of which part of the ship he<br \/>should drive his plane<br \/>     into.[65]<br \/>     Corporal Takamasa Senda before his departure had been singing many<br \/>songs with<br \/>     children, and at times, sat quietly alone, burning old letters in an<br \/>expression of deep<br \/>     thought. The last night, he looked up at the stars and said, \"You are<br \/>lucky, this will be<br \/>     the last time I see the stars...I wonder how my mother is<br \/>doing....\"[66] His singing with<br \/>     the children was probably to forget the coming mission, and his<br \/>burning the letters was<br \/>     to forget the past. Saying that he wanted to be able to see the stars<br \/>again is an<br \/>     indication that he wanted to live.<br \/>     Whether patriotism was the answer to the way they felt can be doubted<br \/>in the case of<br \/>     Second Lieutenant Fumihiro Mitsuyama. His real name was Tak Kyong-<br \/>Hyong.[67]<br \/>     He was Korean, but like other Japanese men, he too was sent to war,<br \/>and was chosen<br \/>     as a Kamikaze pilot. The last evening before his mission, he went to<br \/>the cafeteria<br \/>     appointed by the Army, which was run by a lady, Mrs. Tome Torihama,<br \/>who was<br \/>     called \"Okasan\" (mother) by the young Kamikaze pilots of Chiran Air<br \/>Base. He went<br \/>     up to her and said, \"I will sing you a song of my country,\" and sang<br \/>Ariran. By the<br \/>     second verse he was in tears.[68] Because he was a graduate of<br \/>college, he had not<br \/>     volunteered willingly but was probably pressured to circle \"desire<br \/>earnestly\" in the<br \/>     survey, especially being a Korean.<br \/>     According to survivors, all say that they felt quite calm, and normal.<br \/>They were not<br \/>     scared of death but were happy that the day had finally come.[69] Mr.<br \/>Itatsu was a<br \/>     pilot who had departed for the mission but because his engine had<br \/>stopped on the way,<br \/>     his plane fell into the sea, and he survived.[70] He says that he<br \/>remembers being happy<br \/>     when he was chosen for the mission.[71] He said that the young people<br \/>then who had<br \/>     gone into military schools did not have the ability to think<br \/>logically, and therefore sent<br \/>     applications without much thought. He also says that these pilots were<br \/>really innocent,<br \/>     and thought purely that they would be able to serve, and protect the<br \/>country.[72] An<br \/>     author and a critic, Tadao Morimoto said in a T.V. program that he<br \/>believes that it was<br \/>     not true that they were happy to die for the country.[73] Mr. Itatsu<br \/>says that he<br \/>     disagrees with him because some young and innocent pilots died<br \/>believing they could<br \/>     become happy dying that way.[74] Since Mr. Itatsu was one of the<br \/>Kamikaze pilots<br \/>     himself, his comments should be given more credibility than the<br \/>comments made by<br \/>     Tadao Morimoto who had been an officer in the Navy during the war, but<br \/>was not<br \/>     involved with the Kamikaze attacks himself.<br \/>     Kiichi Matsuura, the author of the book Showa wa Toku (Showa Far Away)<br \/>wrote<br \/>     that he recalls the first planned date of the mission was like every<br \/>other day, and no<br \/>     special conversation took place. When he found that his aircraft would<br \/>not function<br \/>     properly, he suddenly felt the strong urge to live. His aircraft not<br \/>functioning implied that<br \/>     he would not die. Realizing that, he could only think of living. On<br \/>his second \"chance\"<br \/>     his plane was fine halfway. He was with two other pilots, and seeing<br \/>one of them sink<br \/>     into the sea, realized a problem in all their engines. The two<br \/>returned. He recalls that<br \/>     until the moment they decided to return, he was not at all scared,<br \/>because they were<br \/>     flying toward death. However, returning was frightening. He had to<br \/>protect his life from<br \/>     death.[75]<br \/>     Finally, in an interview with a member of the Self Defense Force, Mr.<br \/>Matsunaga, a<br \/>     word which held the key to a better understanding was mentioned. The<br \/>word was<br \/>     \"decision.\" To the question, \"If something happened, would you not be<br \/>afraid?\" he<br \/>     answered that it was his decision to enter such a world, and that he<br \/>would not escape if<br \/>     anything did occur.[76] Similarly, although it was with far more<br \/>psychological pressure,<br \/>     all the Kamikaze pilots had made the decision.<br \/><br \/>     Conclusion<br \/><br \/>     The pilots were, as a matter of fact, not radical nor extremely<br \/>patriotic, but were the<br \/>     average Japanese of the time. It was a dream for the young boys of<br \/>late Taisho period<br \/>     and early Showa to serve in the military, especially in the Air Force,<br \/>as a career. Not all<br \/>     pilots who wanted to become Kamikaze pilots could become one. Although<br \/>this may<br \/>     sound strange, there were so many volunteers to make the suicidal and<br \/>fatal attacks,<br \/>     that the military, to be fair, had to let the ones with the better<br \/>grades go earlier. Because<br \/>     of the aura that had covered Japan, the young pilots of 18 and 19 were<br \/>eager to go.<br \/>     Those of the Special Flight Officer Probationary Cadets who had their<br \/>own thoughts<br \/>     like Second lieutenants Suzuki, Uehara, and Anazawa were able to<br \/>separate their<br \/>     personal life from what was required of them to do for the war. They<br \/>felt the<br \/>     responsibility to go.<br \/>     How exactly the pilots felt about the attacks could not be known but<br \/>it seems that they<br \/>     were, in general, happy that they could serve the country, but had<br \/>other thoughts<br \/>     towards death. Because the brainwashing done on the pilots trained in<br \/>military schools<br \/>     was so effective, it changed the priority of 'life, then country,' the<br \/>other way around.<br \/>     Life was made, by the atmosphere and education of the time, to be not<br \/>the first priority,<br \/>     but something that must be given up for the first priority, the<br \/>Emperor and the country.<br \/>     If they believed that ever-lasting happiness would follow their<br \/>mission, there was<br \/>     nothing for them to fear. Those who were not brainwashed (the college<br \/>graduates) may<br \/>     have felt fear. If they were able to detach themselves totally from<br \/>life, they might have<br \/>     felt better. Yet is detaching oneself from life really possible?<br \/>     In any case, it seems that they were all optimistic. They volunteered,<br \/>believing their<br \/>     death might save their family, the ones they loved, and Japan.<br \/>However, as a student<br \/>     investigating fifty years after the events, it was not possible for me<br \/>to understand exactly<br \/>     how the pilots had felt towards their mission.<br \/><br \/>     Appendix One<br \/><br \/>     The Different Pilots' Training Schools in The Imperial Army Where the<br \/>Kamikaze Pilots<br \/>     Were Trained<br \/><br \/>     The Youth Pilot Training School<br \/>          The students who had graduated from the Youth Pilot Training<br \/>schools had the<br \/>          best flying skills of the Imperial Army. This schooling system<br \/>had begun in 1933,<br \/>          and lasted until the end of the Pacific War. The age range that<br \/>was accepted into<br \/>          this school was between 14 and 17. Originally, the time spent in<br \/>the school was<br \/>          three years. One year of general education in Tokyo and two years<br \/>of<br \/>          specialized education in various parts of Japan. However, by the<br \/>end of the war,<br \/>          the students of the 15th term were trained in only a year and 8<br \/>months and were<br \/>          made into soldiers just in time for the Okinawa Tokko.<br \/>     Candidates for Second Lieutenant<br \/>          Non-commissioned officers whose excellence was recognized were<br \/>educated in<br \/>          the Air Corps Academy. Because of their experience and career,<br \/>their skill was<br \/>          of a high level.<br \/>     Imperial Army Air Corps Academy<br \/>          Students who had completed the four-year course of Middle School<br \/>or the<br \/>          Higher Elementary School took an examination to enter. They<br \/>became civil<br \/>          servants who had decided to work in the Army. Graduates of the<br \/>56th and 57th<br \/>          term were involved in the Okinawa Tokko.<br \/>     Pilot Trainee<br \/>          The pilot trainees had to have a pilot's license, and had to be<br \/>an Officer<br \/>          Candidate. After one month in a squadron, they received six<br \/>months of flight<br \/>          training in the Imperial Army Air Corps Academy of Kumagaya, and<br \/>after six<br \/>          months as probationary Officer, became Second Lieutenants. Among<br \/>the<br \/>          students of the Ninth term, there were graduates of the Higher<br \/>Pilot training<br \/>          schools.<br \/>     Flight Officer Candidates<br \/>          Officer candidates consisted of drafted men with at least Middle<br \/>School<br \/>          education. After four months of preliminary education, a test was<br \/>taken. If they<br \/>          passed the test, they received the required education for<br \/>officers, and if found fit<br \/>          for the position were ranked as Higher Officer Candidates. After<br \/>serving as<br \/>          probationary officers, they were ranked as Second Lieutenants. If<br \/>they were not<br \/>          found fit as an officer, they became the Lower Officer Candidates<br \/>and became<br \/>          non-commissioned officers. Those who had the interest in flying<br \/>received training<br \/>          with the Special Flight Officer Probationary Cadet in the<br \/>Imperial Air Corps<br \/>          Academy. The students of the 7th, 8th, and 9th term were involved<br \/>in the<br \/>          Okinawa Tokko.<br \/>     Special Flight Officer Probationary Cadets<br \/>          This was for the college students drafted into the war by the<br \/>Gakuto Shutsujin<br \/>          who were interested in the Air Corps. The 1st term entered in<br \/>October 1943,<br \/>          the 2nd in December 1943, and the 3rd in June 1944. They were<br \/>made into<br \/>          Second Lieutenants in one year, half a year earlier than planned.<br \/>One sixth of the<br \/>          entire Okinawa Tokko of the Army was made up of these 312 cadets.<br \/>     Pilot Training Schools<br \/>          This was not an institution belonging to the Army, but belonged<br \/>to the Ministry of<br \/>          Communications. However, the content was almost the same. There<br \/>were<br \/>          twelve of these schools and the students were separated into the<br \/>regular course<br \/>          and flight training course. Students of fourteen to fifteen years<br \/>old entered the<br \/>          regular course. After three years of regular education, the<br \/>students received one<br \/>          year of flight training which the students of the flight training<br \/>course had<br \/>          completed. To enter the flight training school from the<br \/>beginning, an educational<br \/>          background of more than Middle School graduation was required.<br \/>108 of the<br \/>          graduates died in the Okinawa Tokko.<br \/><br \/>     Appendix Two<br \/><br \/>     The 72nd Shinbu Squadron<br \/>     Many of the Kamikaze pilots mentioned in the Essay were pilots of the<br \/>72nd Shinbu-tai<br \/>     of the Imperial Army. (Shinbu refers to the<br \/>squadrons of the<br \/>     Imperial Army which made the suicide attacks by aircraft.) They were<br \/>stationed in<br \/>     Heijo, what is now P'yongyan of North Korea. From March 25, 1944, they<br \/>were in<br \/>     Kagamihara, Gifu prefecture for about one month. Before the mission in<br \/>May, the unit<br \/>     returned to Kyushu, and stayed in Metabaru, for a few days, and flew<br \/>over to Bansei<br \/>     Air Base. Their attack was first planned to be made on May 20, 1945,<br \/>however it was<br \/>     postponed to May 27, 1945 due to rainy weather.<br \/>     Of the twelve pilots, three did not depart for the suicide attack.<br \/>Corporal Atsunobu<br \/>     Sasaki was killed by an American P-51 on May 2, 1945 in China. On the<br \/>same day,<br \/>     Sergeant Nobuyoshi Nishikawa was injured, and could not take part in<br \/>the mission.<br \/>     The aircraft of Kairyu Kanamoto malfunctioned on the day of their<br \/>mission, and could<br \/>     not take off. The remaining nine made their mission from Bansei Air<br \/>Base at 6:00 a.m.,<br \/>     May 27, 1945.<br \/><br \/>     Appendix Three<br \/><br \/>     The Research Method<br \/><br \/>     The first time I learned of this topic was in August, 1992.  It was<br \/>the time when I went<br \/>     with my parents to Japan and visited manmuseums and talked to many<br \/>people whose<br \/>     age varied from12 to 60 and they have told me many stories about war.<br \/>     There, a great number of primary sources and photographs were<br \/>displayed, which<br \/>     made me even more interested in the topic.<br \/>     Since the summer of 1992, the collection of information started, with<br \/>no academic<br \/>     purpose. In 1993, the book Rikugun Saigo no Tokko Kichi by Shichiro<br \/>Naemura<br \/>     was published. This book was about the Kamikaze pilots who departed<br \/>from Bansei<br \/>     Air Base.<br \/>     That summer of 1993 was crucial to my interest in the Kamikaze pilots.<br \/>First, I visited<br \/>     Chiran Tokko Heiwa Kaikan again on August 21, and looked in more<br \/>detail at the<br \/>     letters, diaries and photographs of the pilots. The photographs were<br \/>extremely inspiring<br \/>     in a sense, since in none of them were the pilots showing an<br \/>expression of fatigue, or<br \/>     regret. Most of them were smiling.<br \/>     On the same night, I decided to spend the evening at \"Tomiya Ryokan\"<br \/>which is what<br \/>     used to be the small restaurant Ms. Tome Torihama ran during the war,<br \/>and which the<br \/>     Kamikaze pilots used frequently. There were several photographs of the<br \/>Kamikaze<br \/>     pilots remaining there.
