Program description<\/h2>\n

The Global Ties U.S.\u00a0MENA-USA Empowering Resilient Girls Exchange (MERGE)<\/a>\u00a0brings together\u00a0young women and\u00a0girls ages 15-19 from the United States and\u00a0Middle East\/North Africa (MENA)\u00a0region in a supportive virtual space to develop emotional resilience skills. Participants discuss and experiment with a variety of stress-relief and coping techniques while guided by trained facilitators, engaging in both synchronous (live) and asynchronous exchange.<\/p>\n

What\u00a0will participants do during\u00a0MERGE?<\/h2>\n

MERGE is an eight\u00a0(8)\u00a0week\u00a0virtual exchange program in\u00a0which\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0learn about mental health, focusing on\u00a0your\u00a0own emotional resilience,\u00a0and empowering your community.\u00a0You\u2019ll spend your\u00a0first week building a supportive global community through cultural exchange activities. The next five weeks\u00a0will explore\u00a0practical approaches to strengthening emotional resilience.\u00a0You\u2019ll be part of a\u00a020-person section \u2014 10\u00a0young women\u00a0from the United States and 10 from the MENA region \u2014 and you will\u00a0support each\u00a0other\u00a0in\u00a0implementing\u00a0these strategies in\u00a0your own lives.<\/p>\n

Your facilitator will guide you throughout the program, providing resources and moderating discussions. You\u2019ll interact with other young women through writing and video, and explore apps such as Flipgrid. Two live discussions about leadership and emotional resilience will provide additional perspectives during your program.\u00a0Prior featured speakers\u00a0<\/span>include<\/span>\u00a0Bilqis Abdul Qadir, a\u00a0<\/span>coach\/activist empowering Muslim girls<\/span>\u00a0in sports, and Alyson Watson, an entrepreneur developing digital tools to assess mental wellbeing.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0In MERGE\u2019S final two weeks, your five-person team will create an entry for MERGE\u2019s digital resilience strategies website to share with your community and the world!<\/p>\n

What do I get from completing the program?<\/h2>\n

By participating in\u00a0MERGE, you will receive a\u00a0Certificate of Completion\u00a0in leadership and\u00a0mental health awareness, access to the U.S. Department of State\u2019s International Exchange Alumni network,\u00a0and\u00a0eligibility for\u00a0unique project funding opportunities\u00a0of\u00a0up $1,000\u00a0from the Stevens Initiative Alumni Small Grants program.<\/p>\n

When will MERGE take place?<\/h2>\n

MERGE runs for eight (8) weeks. The second cohort starts\u00a0September 26,\u00a0<\/span>202<\/span>2<\/span>\u00a0and ends on\u00a0November<\/span>\u00a018<\/span>, 2022<\/span>. The program will require three (3) hours of time each week, generally carried out on your own schedule. You can choose when to complete most activities during the week they become available. You will also join a scheduled video call with your MERGE section at least three times during the program, the timing of which will be determined in advance.<\/p>\n
