Setting and Reporting<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"cParagraphA\">This position is located in the Iraq Team of the Middle East Division (MED), Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Department of Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO) at Headquarters in in New York. The incumbent will report to the Iraq Team Leader\/Senior Political Affairs Officer.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_lblDescriptionTitle4\" class=\"cSubHeader\">Responsibilities<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"cParagraphA\"><span id=\"ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_lblDescriptionContent4\">Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Gathers, selects and analyzes information on Iraq and the Middle East region, as well as the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.<br \/>\n\u2022 Maintains up-to-date knowledge of political and other issues in the Middle East region as they affect developments in Iraq.<br \/>\n\u2022 Keeps abreast of the latest trends and developments in Iraq, and other regional countries and provides inputs on these issues to senior officials and colleagues at UN Headquarters and UNAMI.<br \/>\n\u2022 Monitors national and regional level political developments and provides advice to UNAMI on the ground.<br \/>\n\u2022 Provides technical and substantive backstopping in the implementation of UNAMI\u2019s mandate.<br \/>\n\u2022 Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters.<br \/>\n\u2022 Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations as they relate to Iraq and UNAMI.<br \/>\n\u2022 Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to the work of the UN on Iraq and other countries in the Middle East region.<br \/>\n\u2022 Participates in fact-finding and other missions to Iraq and other countries within assigned area of responsibility.<br \/>\n\u2022 Participates in the provision of secretariat services to Security Council, General Assembly, subsidiary organizations, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and \/or special missions.<br \/>\n\u2022 Carries out other administrative functions related to extrabudgetary funds.<br \/>\n\u2022 Prepares meetings of the SG\/DSG\/USG on Iraq and other countries under MED\u2019s purview.<br \/>\n\u2022 Performs other related duties as required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_lblDescriptionTitle5\" class=\"cSubHeader\">Competencies<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"cParagraphA\"><span id=\"ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_lblDescriptionContent5\">PROFESSIONALISM:<br \/>\nAbility to identify and analyze political, ethnic, racial, social and economic problems that cause civil unrest in countries of the Middle East, and cross-regional trends. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_lblDescriptionTitle7\" class=\"cSubHeader\">Work Experience<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"cParagraphA\"><span id=\"ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_lblDescriptionContent7\">A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required.<br \/>\nExperience working on Middle East issues is required.<br \/>\nExperience in providing support and backstopping to UN (or other international organization) field operations is desirable.<br \/>\nExperience working on Iraq-related issues is desirable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_lblDescriptionTitle8\" class=\"cSubHeader\">Languages<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"cParagraphA\"><span id=\"ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_lblDescriptionContent8\">English and French are working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
