Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national team camp in Copenhagen following tensions surrounding his relationship with new head coach Jorge Jesus. However, the Portuguese superstar has not officially announced his retirement from international football.

The 41-year-old captain unexpectedly left Portugal’s training camp on Wednesday, September 30, ahead of the UEFA Nations League match against Denmark.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed Ronaldo’s departure, while the player himself said that he would reveal the reasons behind his decision at a later time.

Ronaldo promises to reveal the truth

Ronaldo explained on Instagram that his decision came after Jorge Jesus’s press conference and following a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

The Portugal captain said he would tell Portuguese supporters “the truth” about the reasons behind his departure in due course.

Neither Ronaldo nor the FPF has provided a detailed explanation of what happened.

According to Reuters, Portugal coach Jorge Jesus and FPF president Pedro Proença reportedly attempted to persuade Ronaldo to remain with the squad, but the forward eventually left Copenhagen on a private flight to Madrid.

Tensions followed Ronaldo’s omission against Norway

The situation developed after Portugal’s recent 2–1 victory over Norway in the Nations League.

Ronaldo remained on the bench throughout the match. Jesus subsequently acknowledged that the player had been frustrated by the decision, although the coach rejected the idea that there was an unresolved major conflict between them.

Ronaldo then trained separately from the rest of the squad despite not being injured.

Jesus had indicated that Ronaldo could again start the next match from the bench, adding further attention to the situation.

Ronaldo will miss the Denmark match

Portugal faced Denmark without Ronaldo after his departure from the squad.

Despite the absence of their captain, Portugal won the match 4–2, with João Cancelo, Gonçalo Ramos, Vitinha and João Félix scoring for the Portuguese side.

The result means Portugal continued its Nations League campaign without its most famous player.

Has Cristiano Ronaldo retired from Portugal?

Not officially.

Ronaldo’s departure from the training camp does not automatically mean that he has retired from international football.

As of October 2, 2026, there has been no official announcement from Ronaldo confirming the end of his Portugal career. The Portuguese Football Federation has also not announced his international retirement.

This distinction is important because Ronaldo has promised to explain his reasons for leaving the camp, leaving the question of his international future open.

A historic international career

Whatever happens next, Ronaldo has already established himself as one of the most important players in Portuguese football history.

He is Portugal’s most-capped player and all-time leading international goalscorer, with 146 goals for the national team.

The 2026 World Cup also marked another historic achievement for Ronaldo: he became the first player to appear at six World Cups and score at each of them.

His international career began in 2003 and has included European Championship glory with Portugal in 2016 and Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

What happens next?

For now, Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with Portugal remains uncertain.

His departure from the Copenhagen camp has raised questions about his relationship with Jorge Jesus and whether he will return for future international fixtures.

The next important development is likely to come from Ronaldo himself, after he promised to explain publicly why he decided to leave the national team camp.

One thing is clear: Cristiano Ronaldo has not officially announced his retirement from Portugal — but his unexpected departure has opened a new and uncertain chapter in his international career.
