John Montgomery in his book &#8220;The Twenties&#8221; paints this  portrait. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>&#8220;From the  earliest days Mr. Reith insisted on the announcers wearing evening  dress. A man of strong religious convictions, he was determined that  broadcasting should be conducted as a national service, with definite  standards, and not used for entertainment alone.
